Community development is the term given to various projects which don't necessarily fall under a specific area. These projects can include working in orphanages, cooking houses, working with disabled peoples or helping coach sports.
Community development projects give volunteers the opportunity to touch a variety of areas not often reached by more traditional projects by established NGOs. These insights into cultures are often some of the most intimate and emotional, as you see parts of daily life often never relayed by the news cameras.
These types of projects often deal with the development of the core infrastructures of a community. Areas such as irrigation, the building and restoration of homes and schools, establishing community youth centers or sustainable agriculture.
Because of the nature of community development projects (and the nature of the term itself), volunteers are often getting in on the ground level of many projects while they are still in their infancy. A volunteer's contributions during these early stages are some of the most valuable, as volunteers bring their knowledge and insight from their own communities to help lay the ground work for other communities to benefit from. Community development projects are truly an example of bringing something more than just your passion and hard work to a project - you bring some of your own culture and your culture's achievements.
Committing yourself to a community development project is the most selfless way to present your resources to an area by saying, "I'm here to help, where ever you need me."
