Working with wildlife in any capacity is a privilege, but working with exotic animals in their native habitat is an experience unto its own. Often times many of the animals you will be working with, are those you've only ever seen in a zoo or on television.
In developing countries, establishing systems for health care, education and other human-related areas of their infrastructure are given more money and attention than some of the "natural" inhabitants. In turn, the organization and functioning of some wildlife reserves may still be in their infancy, which makes for a prime opportunity for volunteers to visit these projects and truly make a difference.
Some natural areas will be privy to better management and financial aid than others, and in turn may maintain extremely stringent regulations regarding foreigners. Don't be offended if certain delicate areas of ecosystems are not accessible to volunteers.
For volunteers hoping to utilize their experience as an internship or to boost their resume, projects helping wildlife are excellent, combining a unique field experience while working for an overseas development organization is a note to highlight on any resume.
Communities in many developing countries often have a much more intimate relationship with their wildlife than westerners - where most of our "wildlife" is reserved to squirrels, birds and house pets. Visit a rural community in a developing county and you'll find this quite the contrary.
There is a saying that you can often get a good insight into a culture's ideology, by being conscious of how they treat their animals. In rural communities where animals are a part of daily life, you are able to see how animals contribute to a culture's ecosystem, daily dangers, food staples, beauty and identity.
Being able to touch, and be touched by a culture beyond simply eating the food and learning their folklore is an experience surreal and one that is as dwindling in opportunity as the ever diminishing nature environments are.
