If you're setting off to volunteer with kids, get ready to have your heartstrings tugged. Children in developing countries not only lack resources for educational and hygienic needs, but also the relatively immeasurable qualities of life like toys, safe neighborhoods and opportunities to grow.
Projects involving children can vary, and include working in more traditional spaces like classrooms. But, the opportunities to help children are always in need of people and resources, and you may find yourself in non-traditional spaces such as working in orphanages, coaching sports and working in after-school centers.
Without a question, projects working with children are some of the most emotionally draining. If you are getting set to go on one of these projects, prepare yourself to develop a sincere sense of attachment to the children you are working with, but keep in mind that in time you'll have to leave.
Many projects with children in developing countries are over-crowded and under-funded orphanages with children who have little access to the idea of a world larger than the four walls of their nurseries. With a limited availability to books, the internet and other learning materials, the presence of an teacher and caregiver takes the children outside those walls.
Some individuals have a calling to spend their lives bringing aid and resources to children in developing countries. Others of us do what we can, when we can but make a point that while we're in country we're laying a foundation for the children to grow from and other volunteers to build on.
Often times, working with children are the projects that volunteers feel like they left "undone." Despite these feelings, it's important to know that however short the time you spend at these projects, it is invaluable.
