Skilled Work

Often times, volunteering projects abroad just need a set of hands.  While this is often the case with many projects, it isn't necessarily the rule. Developing countries with volunteer projects in their infancy, often need a bit of guidance and nudge in the right direction as much as they need volunteers themselves.

The predominant skill set associated with volunteering abroad is often medical training, but by no means is this the only set of talents projects are in need of

Volunteers with experience working in education or child care often find themselves right at home, as youth needs are often some of the most underfunded in developing countries.

Some projects that are very receptive to particular skill sets include engineers on building or community development projects, agriculturalists or botanists who help with local crop production, or even marketers who help villages develop and sell goods.

But while immediately applicable skills are fantastic, any area of expertise can and will be utilized in some facet.  Whether volunteers come from a background in media, business, management or project planning, every skill set is almost always malleable to the needs of the projects.

Even if your particular training doesn't seem to have any relation to the project you are interested in, chances are your training likely doesn't exist in the community.  Whether or not you can immediately apply that to the project you are working on or not, the community still stands to benefit a great deal from your knowledge.

Bringing a particular skill set to a volunteer project is an invaluable service. Not only do these volunteers provide an extra set of hands, but they also help bring a sense of focus and consolidation to the groups momentum.  This focus is a foundation for future volunteers to build on and carry forward.
