In April 2009, WorldTeach will begin an exciting new year-long program that will send up to 20 volunteers to teach in public elementary and high schools in the Nakhon Phanom Province in Northeastern Thailand.  Nakhon Phanom lies along the Mekong river on the border of Laos, in the far northeastern part of Thailand known as Isan.

This province is beautiful and relatively untouched by the outside world compared to the rest of Thailand.  In the more rural villages, many people have never even seen a Westerner.

Volunteers will teach English at schools throughout the province, in both city and rural settings.  Volunteers will teach in English, but the national language is Thai, and the local language is Isan, the language of eastern Thailand, which is a mix of Lao and Thai.

The students you will be teaching are among the most underprivileged in the country, and the impact your presence as a volunteer teacher will have on them will undoubtedly be life-changing, as will their impact on you.

Volunteers should also plan on running a variety of extra-curricular activities for the students, such as English camps, clubs, and other activities to interact with the students outside of school.  Volunteers will also be in a unique position to assist the Thai English teachers in the area to find English resources that are suitable and up-to-date for their students, thus creating a more self-sustaining teaching environment.
