GVI has teamed up with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI) to offer volunteers this very special opportunity to work in Rwanda assisting in the long-term conservation of the endangered mountain gorilla. The future of these gorillas is highly dependent on the health of the forests in which they live, the gorillas depend on this land for food and safety. Unfortunately these forests are in danger of depletion due to growing human populations in the region.

The DFGFI works with many organizations including community-based organizations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the National University of Rwanda and other critical conservation projects as part of their conservation outreach plan. In 2007, the Karisoke Research Center which was set up by the late Doctor Fossey, celebrated its 40th anniversary.
